Educational visit in the Finnish Youth Centres

Behind the scenes: The Finnish camp schools and outdoor education

The Finnish Youth Centres welcome visitors to learn about our activity-based learning methods, adventure education and environmental issues. We are the hot spots of outdoor education, where schoolchildren, families, education professionals, government and municipal education officials can explore Finnish nature and enjoy our educational services in a safe and positive atmosphere.

The visit includes introduction to the Finnish camp school system and introduction to the Youth Centres’ pedagogical approach as well as the operations. The Finnish Youth Centres are experts in non-formal learning, and we have for decades witnessed the success of our non-formal learning methods. Visitors will see and take part in camp school activities of their selection. Visitors will learn about experiential learning, which is the process of learning through experience, more specifically defined as “learning through reflection on doing”. In addition, they will learn about outdoor education methods and how sustainability and environmental values are included in our activities.

School camp in Marttinen

School camp in Marttinen

In school camps of Marttinen the participants’ and group’s aims play an important role. It is worth participants’ while to take part in planning the programme and aims from the start. It is possible to include nature in the programme by having adventures in the surrounding area, exercise by finding one’s own limits, handicraft skills by developing creativity, cultural heritage by going on scavenger hunts back in time or group work skills by deciding to contribute to the common good together. Check out the programme service pages to see what aims can be achieved with various programmes and everything you can do at a school camp.
