Traditional village of Virrat

The traditional village on the Marttinen Island is a versatile place, in which old wooden houses can be visited and traditional forest work can be experienced. The beautiful cultural environment pleases both adults and children.

We organize guided museum tours and “time travels” in and around the traditional village for visitors of any ages. Especially in summer time many interesting exhibitions and performances about life in the good old past take place. Periodically we also offer varying painting and handicraft exhibitions. The traditional village is an ideal place for tourist groups, families and school classes – history is living here! You can also find accommodation opportunities and restaurants on the island. Our programs are adjusted to the individual wishes of our visitors and are on request performed in English and other languages.

Moreover the traditional village is also a teaching place, on which historical and social studies are organized under the guidance of professional trained museum lectors.
The educational program referring to Finnish culture and traditions is specially aimed at school classes that visit the Marttinen Island within a school camp. The main intention of the lessons is to point out to the pupils the meaning of traditions and to emphasize how important it is to appreciate one’s own culture. Under the motto “Look, realize and do-it-yourself!” the traditional village offers the perfect environment in order to make history alive.
